Don’t stop caring about what you write. Care deeply. Make it count for something. Just keep in mind that every piece can’t resonate with everyone, but every piece will resonate with someone.
Stephen King suggests “if you’re a bad writer, no one can help you become a good one, or even a competent one. If you’re good and want to be great . . fuhgeddaboudit.” Does that mean all of us who are good are doomed to mere “goodness”?
Hey Roomie, we need to have a chat. I know I smile and wave as we pass, but I really kind of hate your guts. It’s not you, necessarily, it’s just your behavior and personal demeanor that kind of sets me off. Now, I know I should have probably said something in the moment. Maybe a better, more assertive version of myself would have, and we could have avoided a lot of this unpleasantness. But we need to set a few ground rules if we’re going to keep living together.
